Cossatot River State Park is located a little under 120 miles south of the Fort Smith city center and can be reached in about two hours via route US-71. This state park is also a haven for wildlife watchers and photographers, as it provides habitat to different local species of birds and mammals. Some of the facilities you can find here include nature trails, picnic spots, boat launches, and a visitor center.


2. Oklahoma City

Located about 180 miles west of Fort Smith, the capital and largest city of Oklahoma is a wonderful place to spend a weekend checking out museums, famous tourist attractions, cultural centers, and historical monuments. Known for its Native American history and its cowboy culture, Oklahoma City features world-class museums, a bustling entertainment district, and famous landmarks.

Driving from the Fort Smith city center to downtown Oklahoma City takes about two and a half hours via route I-40. Once you arrive, some of the places you should visit include the Myriad Botanical Gardens & Crystal Bridge Tropical Conservatory, the Oklahoma City Zoo, the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, the Bricktown Entertainment District, and the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum.


3. Lake Dardanelle State Park

If you are searching for a beautiful nature reserve where you can spend the weekend camping, hiking through the woods, and enjoying some time away from the city, Lake Dardanelle State Park is the place to be. Located a little under 85 miles east of Fort Smith, this place provides public access to a 34,000-acre reservoir, picnic facilities, playgrounds, boat ramps, a fishing pier, and a visitor center.
