As the evenings lengthen and the weather grows warmer, it’s the perfect time of year to find out what the town of Fort Smith, AR has to offer. Get out and about in your local community with our list of fantastic spring activities in the area.

1. Reopening of the Park at West End

The little park in the heart of Fort Smith’s downtown area closed down during the pandemic, but after extensive renovations, there will be a soft reopening on April 22 at 10am. The vintage Italian carousel will be open for rides, and there’s a new host of children’s activities, including balloon darts and duck pond.

The refurbished Pullman car will reopen as Wild Waffles, and there’ll also be a snack bar in the form of a double-decker bus named the White Buffalo Tavern. This iconic site already holds many nostalgic memories, so come along to celebrate its reopening and make a few more!

2. Parrot Island Waterpark

If the warmer weather has put you in the mood for an open air swim, head out to Parrot Island at 7300 Zero Street. With heartstopping waterslides, a wave pool, activity pool, and surf machine, as well as themed bathing areas for little ones, it’s a great day out for the whole family. Food is available to buy and there are plenty of places to relax on the waterside.

The season begins on May 13, so take the chance to splash about in the sun.

3. The Arkansas River Valley Nature Center

Springtime is the best time to reconnect with nature, and a visit to the Janet Huckabee Nature Center at 8300 Wells Lakes Road is the best place to do it. It’s set in 170 acres overlooking Wells Lake, and opens from 8.30am to 4.30pm from Tuesday to Saturday. With exhibits on local wildlife, an aquarium, live snakes and turtles on display, and an interactive discovery room, it’s a great place for children to learn about the world around them.

There are also opportunities for kayaking, canoeing, and archery, and the grounds are wonderful to explore. It also makes a beautiful location for a picnic, and you’ll have plenty of space in the trunk of your Hyundai Tucson for blankets and baskets, so you could also take the chance to eat in the open air.
