Taking a walk is great for a person’s physical and mental health, and it’s fun and relaxing too!  Luckily for folks in the Fort Smith, AR area, there are a variety of quality hiking trails in the area.

 

1. Rice Cardin Levee Trail

For folks looking to spend a little time by the water, Rice Cardin Levee Trail is the place to be. This smoothly paved trail runs along the banks of the Arkansas River for over 12 miles, taking in scenic views of the water and winding through the woods in places. There’s also plenty of artwork along the way, including murals.

Find the access point at Riverfront Park on Riverfront Drive. If you prefer to cycle, bike rentals are available at the park, along with plenty of parking and bathroom facilities. The trail is complete with ample lighting and benches, so it’s safe and comfortable.

2. Fort Smith National Historic Site Loop Trail

If you’re keen to enjoy a pleasant stroll with the chance to see plenty of interesting historic sights, check out Fort Smith National Historic Site Loop Trail. The smooth, concrete path winds around the site, taking in plenty of interesting natural and historic views.

There are plenty of nearby businesses too, which means there’s a good range of options for a bite to eat if you’re hungry after your hike. Why not check out the Bakery District, just a short walk away, and try some yummy pastries? A large parking lot is available close to the Historic Site’s visitor center.

3. Ben Geren Fitness Trail

With its short length, minimal elevation changes, and smooth shale path, this trail is perfect for folks of all mobility levels. The views are good, with the trail passing by a pond and plenty of woodlands. There are even fitness stations along the way, offering free fitness equipment for folks to use for a little added exercise!

You can access this trail through Ben Geren Regional Park. Bathrooms and parking are available, and the park offers cycling trails too.

4. Creekmore Park Loop

Creekmore Park is one of Fort Smith’s premier outdoor spaces. Offering easy accessibility, pleasant scenery, and a good range of facilities, it’s no wonder it’s so popular with locals. The park is also home to around a mile of walking trails, ideal for a short family stroll after school or work. Enjoy a little exercise while taking in the views, then let the kids enjoy the playground, or stop for a picnic.

Creekmore Park can be found by Rogers & South 31st Street. Restrooms and parking are available onsite.
