1. Ben Geren Mountain Biking Trail System

This large trail network in south Fort Smith has something for everyone. It includes both flat sections with no obstacles and steep, technical sections on the Hobo Hill part of the route. Expect to find lots of rocks and roots under your wheels. Some sections are popular with hikers, especially the aforementioned Hobo Hill, so watch your speed on the downhills and keep a lookout around the corners. The trails are almost always open; they’re only likely to be shut if there’s been very heavy rain.

The main entrance to the trail network is in Ben Geren Park, close to the golf course. The trail changes rapidly as you progress, and is about 18 miles long, but can be ridden several ways, with plenty of opportunities for shortcuts. It’s best to start on the Beaver Dam Trail, as it’s a good warm-up before tackling Hobo Hill. Once you’re up there, weave through the many trails as you see fit, taking due care on the bridges.

2. Springhill Mountain Bike Trail

This fairly flat trail is the site of the Springhill Classic MTB race, but don’t let that put you off, as most of the trail is quite flat, with one or two technical sections and plenty of turns. It’s the perfect spot for beginner riders, as you’re never far from civilization, with easy parking nearby. Toilets, camping, and pavilions are also not far off. In total, the trail is just under 10 miles, and starts and finishes at the parking lot near Route 59, on the Arkansas River.

3. Fossil Flats Trail

Heading north from Fort Smith, Fossil Flats Trail is located in Devil’s Den State Park and is easily one of the best trails in the area.  It offers a great ride through the rugged Ozark Mountains, passing close to the exposed limestone flats of Lee Creek. It’s another loop trail that is usually ridden clockwise from the trailhead at the southern tip of the loop, but there’s nothing stopping you from riding it in either direction.

Starting behind Campground and starts on a service road that narrows down to some premium singletrack after less than a mile. It takes you through a short warm-up loop, before dropping down towards the creek. As you approach the creek, you’ll find the trail starts to climb up above the limestone flats and back into the woods.

These are our favorites when it comes to mountain bike trails, but maybe you have a favorite that’s not on this list? Then head down to Crain Hyundai of Fort Smith today and let us know!
