Hiking is great exercise for both the body and the mind. Fresh air, sunshine, and nature are the perfect combination for reducing stress and getting your body moving. Whether you’re new to the area, visiting, or a lifelong resident looking for a new trail, here are the three best hiking spots near Fort Smith.

  1. Ben Geren Park

Ben Geren Park has a variety of trails to offer hikers. If you’re looking for a trail for the whole family, including your four-legged friend, then consider the Ben Geren Fitness Course. This 1.5-mile loop trail is perfect for hikers of all skill levels. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash at all times. The trail is partially ADA-accessible and made of shale and dirt, with several fitness stations located along the way. There’s almost zero elevation, making this an excellent trail for beginning runners.

Sebastian County owns and operates the Ben Geren Park, which also includes over 7.4 miles of paved trails and 14 miles of rugged trails for the more adventurous hikers and cyclists. The park also has baseball and softball fields, soccer fields, and tennis courts. There’s pavilion rental available and playground equipment to make a family day of it.

  1. Fort Smith National Historic Site

Fort Smith National Historic Site commemorates the forced removal of five tribes from their lands. The River Walk at Fort Smith National Historic Site is a 1.5-mile scenic walk along the Arkansas River. This paved trail begins at the park’s main entrance and includes the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail Overlook, offering a scenic view of the Poteau River emptying into the Arkansas River.

This beautiful trail includes informational signage to make this hike educational as well as physical. It takes you by Belle Point, the first fort location, along with the Visitor Center, the original barrows, jail, and courthouse. The National Park Service manages the park and maintains the trail. When out on a hike, you can also enjoy the wildlife in the area, including various birds to watch.

  1. Sunnymede Walking Trail

On the edge of Fort Smith is a newer nature trail that the whole family will enjoy. This 1.5-mile loop trail is partially paved, making it enjoyable for all ages and skill levels. You’ll enjoy the views of both the Sunnymede Creek and the Arkansas River as you travel along the trail. Feel free to bring your four-legged friends along for the hike as long as they’re on a leash at all times. The trail offers nine smaller off-shoots to add a little more length and adventure to your walk.

Sunnymede Walking Trail also features benches to allow families to sit and enjoy the sounds, smells, and sights around you. You’ll find this trail at the most eastern end of Grand Avenue. It’s another great place in Fort Smith for bird-watching and enjoying the wildflowers along your walk.
